heron

Herons are patient hunters. They wait, still as a tree for their next meal, trusting that Mother Earth will supply it. These gentle, yet giant birds don’t stress about what’s to come, or if it will be bigger or smaller than their last meal. They are wiser, older souls who have mastered the art of patience.

Stillness requests full-body awareness because in it, the body is diligently working. Every sound is clear, each posture preparation for any outcome. What it can’t see, it can feel, and it trusts the timing of it.

The deep eyes of the heron filter out reflections and magnifications that emotional waters of lakes, canals, and rivers sometimes bring. They’re not easily swayed by bigger fish that can’t fit in their mouths, nor the ducks and mourning doves on different hunts.

Attuned to the possibilities, when the next gift comes slithering or swimming by, the heron is ready. Just as magnificent as an arm and a spear, the S-curved neck strikes with control, accuracy, and strength.

Often, they are the only ones of their kind, with no other to lead the way. In their solitude, herons have cultivated a self-awareness, they know what they want, they put the blinders on, and, steadfast, wait for it.

Sometimes the wisdom is in standing still. Let the fish come to you and don’t be picky!

Let me be patient like the great blue heron who’s wings only fly when the work is done.
